A Phoenix motorcycle accident lawyer is getting paid more than $1 million after a federal judge ruled she was not entitled to a jury trial in the death of a man she says was the victim of police brutality.
Sarah Hall, who represented Andrew Lee Jones, had sought to dismiss the case in federal court in June 2016 after he died in an incident involving the Phoenix police.
Justice Michael D. Jackson dismissed the case last month after a six-month trial, saying it would be too expensive for the Phoenix Police Department to defend a trial.
Hall and her attorney, Scott Karpeles, filed an amended complaint on Oct. 29 seeking $1,918,638.29.
The amount would cover legal fees, costs related to the case and damages to the injured Jones, according to the complaint.
Hall has been awarded more than a million dollars by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for her work on motorcycle accident cases, the complaint says.
Karpels said his client has never had an attorney hired to defend her in a motorcycle accident case, but that he has worked with a law firm to hire one.
Karspels said he was surprised to hear that Hall had been paid a million for the work.
“She’s been doing it for a long time,” he said.
“We’ve had a lot of cases, and she’s a great lawyer.
We’re excited to have her back.”
The lawsuit claims police violated Jones’ constitutional rights, assaulted him and threatened him with arrest in a parking lot and on a highway.
The lawsuit says Jones suffered injuries that could have been prevented if he had remained in his vehicle.
Police officers allegedly hit Jones on a bicycle with their hands and feet, punched him in the face and body and kicked him.
The complaint says police also assaulted him on a sidewalk and on the side of the road, knocking him unconscious.
The Phoenix Police Chief has been placed on leave.
Police department said they have launched an internal investigation into the case.
Karrps said the case has been brought to the attention of the U,P.P.A., which investigates and prosecutes police misconduct cases.
“This case has never been brought before the Phoenix Public Integrity Unit,” Karpes said.
The P.I.U. is a unit of the Phoenix Metropolitan Police Department, which is part of the Justice Department.
The department did not respond to a request for comment.
The lawsuit names Phoenix, the city of Phoenix and police Chief Michael Brown.
A spokesman for Phoenix said the department is looking into the matter.
The city said it would not comment on pending litigation.
Jones was riding his bike when two officers pulled him over.
He was arrested on a warrant for driving without a license and was later charged with driving while intoxicated.
His attorney has said he did not realize that he was being pulled over.
Hall has been a motorcycle crash lawyer for several years, but said she never expected to get the $1 billion she has received for her bike accident work.
“I just never expected this level of money to come to me,” Hall said.
